2019 Pod Buyer's Guide

1) Suorin Drop

Pros:
  • Best-in-class smoothness of draw, flavor expression, and warmth of output
  • Beautiful water drop design
  • Completely puff-activated and buttons-free
Cons:
  • Refilling could be easier
  • Works well with only 50-60% VG liquids,
Review:
Suorin Drop's uniquely elegant look and fantastic flavor performance make it our most recommended pod kit for enthusiasts of flavor. Vapor volume and warmth are on-point, making for an amazing experience with fruit, beverage, and menthol liquids.  The pod is slightly more difficult to refill due to the dual chamber design: the rubber covers of both chambers must be held open while refilling to make sure the two chambers refill evenly. The dual chamber design is the source of its strength, however, as it ensures that both ends of the heating element are evenly wicked, producing great flavor and helping prevent burning out the wick.

2) Renova Zero

Pros:
  • Easiest pod to refill
  • Leak resistant due to vacuum design
  • Puff-activated, with a button reserved for fully on and fully off settings
Cons:
  • Cool vapor output doesn't make the most of fruits and menthols
  • Works well with only 50-60% VG liquids
Review:
Renova Zero's puff-sensor is possibly the best in the market, consistently activating on every puff, light or strong. Refilling is also very easy due to the self-sealing liquid port removing the need to fiddle with rubber caps or covers. Flavor is also very good, though the cooler vapor output doesn't bring out the best in high quality fruit, menthol, and tobacco liquids. This is best used with beverage or pastry-inspired liquids. The design is beautiful and discrete, though some may find the resemblance to a highlighter a con.

3) Nikola Delorean

Pros:
  • Great power control, allowing for 4 levels of vapor volume and warmth
  • Car-inspired form and finish
  • Works well with 50-70% VG range, and lower nic levels
Cons:
  • Flashy appearance may not work for everyone
  • Setting power is made difficult due to the unusual color coding of LED indicators; keep the manual on hand
  • Button-activated
Review:
Nikola set out to make a pod kit that give users more options as to liquid thickness and nicotine level, and they accomplished that. Delorean pods can be filled with 50-70% VG liquids, while power can be increased to output more vapor with lower nicotine levels (3-12mg/ml) or decreased to output less vapor with higher nicotine levels (>12mg/ml up to 50mg/ml). Setting the power is made difficult by the need to work with strangely color-coded LED indicators; if you can't memorize the color code, we recommend keeping the manual on hand if you switch liquids frequently. Flavor is very good, but again there is a need to set the power and test which level works best for the liquid in the pod. Overall, Delorean is excellent for pod enthusiasts looking for a more customizable performance from their device.

4) Vaporesso Nexus AIO

Pros:
  • Ceramic-based coils are very durable and output the cleanest-tasting vapor
  • Understated design and classy aluminum finish
Cons:
  • Some may find flavor output a bit thin (signature of ceramic technology)
  • Coils need to be "breaked in" to max out vapor volume and output
  • Coil replacement is a bit more difficult than just replacing the pod, though it tends to be cheaper, too
Review:
Vaporesso brings its renowned ceramic wicking technology to the pod kit category with Nexus AIO. Flavor output is distinctly clean, but as with all ceramics some break-in period is to be expected before vapor volume and flavor peaks. Nexus replacement coils are affordable and durable to boot, though they do require some fiddling to replace compared to the near perfect plug-and-play design of replacement pod-based kits such as Suorin Drop and Renova Zero. Nexus AIO is beautifully built and finished, with the matte aluminum chassis making it lovely to hold and use. We recommend using 50-60% VG liquids. It doesn't quite reach the flavor performance of Suorin Drop on fruits and menthols, but Nexus AIO does work equally well on all flavor themes.
5) Aspire Breeze 2
Pros:
  • Battery capacity of 1000mAh one of the highest in the category
  • Whole pod or just the coil can be replaced; choice between 1.0ohm (for salt nic liquids) and 0.6ohm coils (for freebase nic liquids)
  • User can keep multiple pods with a matched coil filled with different liquids in their rotation, and switch them up on the device anytime

Cons

  • Some inconsistency in vapor output between puffs
  • Button-activated
